Our story

Jackson County isn’t the Iowa people expect.

Our farm fields roll into limestone bluffs. Timber fills the hollows. Caves reach farther than daylight can follow. Rivers find their way through it all to the Mississippi.

This has always been a place to grow. You can see it in our fields. You can see it in what we’re building.

We’re opening businesses. Bringing old buildings back to life. Building things we once thought we’d have to leave to build. Our young people are showing what they’re capable of. They deserve room to try, people who believe in them, and work worth doing.

We believe this place is worth building on.

There’s room here to find something in yourself, too. Underground. Out on the river. Along a gravel road. Deep in the hills, with another climb ahead.

On summer Saturday nights, we fill the grandstands while stock cars throw dirt. We turn on the radio at the 61 Drive-In. We gather for music in barns and parks. We come home for the county fair.

These things are part of our lives because we keep showing up. Keep making them happen. Keep giving the next generation something to call their own.

Uncommon Ground is our way of carrying that belief forward.

Each piece starts with something real. A cave. A river. A fence line. A hometown engine. A few words that mean more when you know the place.

The things that shape us deserve to be seen.

Worn with pride. Recognized across a room. Carried somewhere new.

We’re proud of what’s here. We’re putting something of ourselves into what comes next. And we believe more people should get to be part of it.

There’s room for you here.
